Cialis: a medication for Erectile Dysfunction
Cialis is a medicine that is used mainly in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men.
1. Mechanism of action
-contains tadalafil as an active ingredient. Tadalafil acts by inhibiting the enzyme phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5). This enzyme is responsible for degrading nitrogen monoxide (no)-dependent on cyclic monophosphate guanosine (cGMP) in the erectile tissue of the penis. By inhibiting PDE-5, the concentration of cGMP is increased, resulting in a relaxation of smooth muscles in the penis, allowing an increase in blood flow to the penis and consequent erection.
2. Characteristics of use
-it has an advantage in terms of its duration of action. In general, it can have an effect for approximately 36 hours (unlike other medicines for DE that are usually shorter in duration), which has led to sometimes being called the "weekend pill".
-it should be prescribed by a doctor and used according to medical instructions, as it may have interactions with other medicines and is not suitable for all men, for example those with certain serious heart disease or taking certain nitrate medicines (as the combination can cause a drastic drop in blood pressure).
