Tadalafil (Cialis): treating Erectile Dysfunction
tadalafil has the following main functions:
1. Treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED)
-it works by inhibiting the enzyme phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5). By inhibiting this enzyme, the concentration of cyclic monophosphate guanosin (cGMP) in the cavernous tissue of the penis is increased. The increase in cGMP causes relaxation of smooth muscles in the penis, which allows greater blood flow to this organ and facilitates obtaining and maintaining an erection.
2. Treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (HTAP)
-it also inhibits PDE-5 in pulmonary vessels, causing relaxation of smooth muscles on the walls of pulmonary vessels. This reduces pulmonary vascular resistance, improving blood flow in the lungs and relieving pulmonary blood pressure in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension.
However, tadalafil should be used on prescription, as it can cause adverse effects and should not be used by people with certain medical conditions or in combination with certain medicines without proper supervision.
